As with all Dover Publications colouring books, this one is well put together. A good size for home or travel at A4 and 64 pages, it is lightweight and easy to move around. The spine is glue bound, meaning it will handle a fair bit of wear and tear.

Some pages do enter the spine, which can be a common frustration, but the spine does lay flat after some use. The pages are single sided, which means basically any medium can be used. As always, put a sheet of cardstock between pages if you’re unsure about bleeding. The paper has a decent amount of tooth, more than most Creative Haven books which was a nice surprise. It’s quite easy to achieve blending and layering with coloured pencils on these pages.

The pages are perforated, like many Dover books, making it easy to pull out and display or store!

The big selling point? Black backgrounds. Every single page is an image that has a black background, which is rare enough in colouring books, let alone in a quality colouring book!

Images

Midnight Forest is a book filled with 32 images of wildlife in a forest. The artist remains the same so artwork is consistent and the same style throughout.

There are squirrels, wolves, birds, big cats and much more for you to add life to.

My one disappointment would be that the images do go over the perforated line – so removing the picture means losing 0.5cm of the image.

Line work is variable, but stays relatively consistent at medium/thin throughout the pages. Some images have areas of high intricacy, but this is few and far between in this book.

Health

Animals are a subject that can be incredibly relaxing to colour, and can be peaceful. If you like colouring animals, then this book will most likely be great for any pain, anxiety or depression you’re feeling. The best part for me was that I wasn’t anxious about ‘screwing up’ – a black background is much more forgiving of mistakes!

The line work and intricacy, as above, will likely not be an issue for vision/fine motor skills impaired in individuals, but as always check the images first!

  1. I agree with your assessment. I just finished the rabbit picture. The paper is heavier than a lot of books I’ve seen. The image going into the perforation isn’t that bad to me. This is my first book with black backgrounds and I really like it!
