Book

By now, you probably know of my fantasy addiction. I can be quite critical of fantasy themed colouring books, and few rank my all star favourites list. Selina Fenech however, always manages to!

Enchanted is a colouring book of her signature artwork, with a theme of magical forests. As with her other books, I was pleasantly surprised by the size – at just under A4 size and 102 pages, it isn’t the standard flimsy fantasy colouring book.

The cover is a glossy cardstock, embellished with a muted image from the book and green accents. It is simple, classy and matches the others in the series perfectly!

The spine is glue bound, although it was pliable basically as soon as I opened it, and even more so after a few colouring sessions. Some images do enter the spine, but it is very easy to get into the parts hidden by the spine.

As with the other books, I had heard some problems with the paper. I have encountered no issues with the paper, in fact, I’m kind of in love with it. Whereas most standard colouring books will allow me 4-5 layers of pencils – this one allowed 7-8 with room for more if I so wanted! This allowed some amazing effects and layering to occur that normally can’t be achieved on standard paper. I do think that markers and fineliners have some shadowing/bleeding issue, but as the pages are one sided, a piece of card or a few sheets of paper behind the image will prevent this being an issue.

Images

There is a video flipthrough at the end of this review.

Fairies. The backbone of this book is fairies, as you may have guessed! But don’t fear, they don’t feel repetitive at all – the style, settings, companions within the images make each picture feel completely new and unique, while still having an underlying sense of consistency. This isn’t an easy thing to achieve, but Selina Fenech does it well!

As well as fairies, there are also unicorns, crows, male fairies, woodland creatures and intricate forestry and settings.
One of the unique features, and a selling point to me, is that each image is repeated. You get 2 of each of the 25 images to play with, which is a great relief for those of us who lack confidence with our skills, or want to try different colours or mediums. It is not something often seen in colouring books and a welcome relief!
Most of the images are portraits, but there are a few landscape images as well. This is a nice break from the portraits, as sometimes a different perspective is a nice change.
Line thickness remains moderate-thin throughout these images, with occasional thinner lines making up backgrounds or forestry. The illustration style is consistent throughout, as well as consistent with the other books. You would think this would be obvious – but it isn’t always the case! Intricacy varies, with some images being very detailed, some being quite simple, and the majority being a mix.

Health

If you benefit from an image, or book that takes you on a journey, or to another world, this is a great book for you. The images are varied enough to help distract you when pain, anxiety, depression or insomnia hit, but aren’t so intricate or small that you won’t be able to concentrate.
The variety of intricacy is great for varied concentration levels as you will almost certainly find an image to suit your concentration level, whether that’s to delve into a picture for hours, or focus for a minute at a time.

The intricacy and line thickness may be suitable for those who have vision or fine motor impairments, but as ever, please look at the images first.

This book, along with Fairy Companions and Mermaids, is one that I keep next to my bed for when I have a bad pain day or struggle with insomnia. I find it perfect for those times!

  1. I love this book. I’m working on one of the larger portraits currently. Selena’s artwork is gorgeous and the two copies of each image is a wonderful idea. Selena also has a ‘mini’ book which contains a selection of images from this, Fairy Companions and Mermaids which seems like the perfect traveling companion.
