Artist – Lindsay Firster
This book is very well constructed – someone has definitely been listening to what colourists want in a book!
The cover is a glossy card with a completed design in eye catching colours. The book itself is spiral bound with a very sturdy wire coil – not an annoying plastic comb one! This means that you can get to every part of the paper and it will lie flat, making it much easier for colourists.
The paper is quite thick and textured – I experienced no bleeding with markers or fineliners, and only a small amount of shadowing. This doesn’t matter really, as the pages are single sided!
It really hits the mark with every part of its construction – spiral bound, decent paper, single sided!
The 31 images are a curly, swirly, lined world of imagination and wonder. The artist has has created a world of shapes and lines in each image, ready for you to disappear into and fill with colour.
The images are hand drawn, which can mean lines are imperfect, but this suits the images quite well. It results in a distinctive style of pattern that fills a page for you to interpret anyway you want.
Line intricacy varies throughout the book, moderate to quite thick with an equal distribution throughout the book. Line intricacies do stay consistent within each individual image though, which is a relief with this sort of image!
Intricacy varies a little throughout the book, there are some pages that have primarily larger spaces, some that have mainly smaller spaces, and some that have half and half.
If you like to just choose an image and a few markers/pencils to zone out and just colour, this book would be really great for that. Whatever your concentration, this book is great as it can be adapted to whatever level of detail and intricacy as you want. If you need to be distracted, and focus on something else without thinking too hard, these images suit that quite well.
The line details and intricacy would make this suitable for vision or fine motor impaired individuals, but as ever, please check the images before you decide to buy.
