Appearance and Packaging
Prismacolor Verithin are designed as an accompaniment to the Prismacolor Premier Soft Core range. They are the same full colour barrel, although in a hexagonal shape, which is handy! The name of the brand, number and colour is embossed on the side of the pencil for ease of identification.
Verithin are available in three sizes, 12, 24 and the full 36 set. These come in a range of cardboard packaging, designed to allow easy access to the pencils.
Ease of Use and Durability
Verithins are made of the same vibrant pigment as the Prismacolor Soft Core, but are an incredibly firm core. They are the hardest core available in coloured pencils, and this allows for a very sharp point to be attained and maintained. They are a wax based core and do layer and blend, although not as well as the Soft Core range.
For regular users of Prismacolor pencils, you will know the difficulty of trying to maintain a point to get into smaller, more intricate areas. The Verithin is the perfect solution for outlines or more intricate areas.
The application is very smooth, although the pigment is not as intense.
Because the core is so firm, they require sharpening far less than most pencils. This means they will last quite a bit longer than standard high quality pencils.
There are 36 colours available in the Prismacolor Verithin range, corresponding to a colour in the full soft core range. There are the necessary colours for outlines and small areas, but not a great range for a full image. See the colour chart below for an idea of the spectrum of colour available.
Value and Availability
The Verithin ranges are widely available both online and in art stores. They would not be great as a main coloured pencil set, but as an accompaniment to any pencil set that has trouble maintaining a firm point! They are not as expensive as the Prismacolor Premier Soft Core, and do last longer. You can see current prices on Amazon US here.
