Artist – Skottie Young
Pages – 120
Publisher – Marvel Comics
With the initial image of a graphic novel stripped of colour, CYO Young Marvels has a fitting cover. The glossy card is predominately white, with Marvels signature red branding, and some partially coloured images from the interior.
At 27.5 x 18.5cm and 120 pages, it is a significant thickness, but a good size for home or travelling. The spine is sturdily glue bound, preventing any pages loosening, although each page is perforated, allowing for easy removal. Images stop short of the perforation, so all are easy to access.
Images are single sided, on bright white, smooth, moderate thickness paper. Pencils layer well, and waterbased markers do not bleed or shadow. Wet media, such as watercolours, and alcohol markers will bleed, so ensure to remove the image or place some paper/card behind the image you are colouring to protect the other images.
Skottie Young is a well renowned illustrator who is the artist behind many different graphic novel series, including the Young Marvel comic series covers. This is where these images have been taken from, stripped of colour and optimised for this adult colouring book.
One of the benefits of this, is that it is very easy to find the original image in colour online – for reference or inspiration. The artwork is often humorous, with Marvels character quirks and foibles we know and love.
The artwork style is consistent throughout, in a graphic novel style. There are 4-5 pages with some text, but only a word or phrase to add to the context of the image.
Line thickness varies from thin to thick throughout, although this does seem very organic to the image and is not immediately noticeable or disturbing. Intricacy does vary quite a bit, with some images containing mainly large areas, others mainly small areas and some with a combination of the two. None of the intricate areas are impossibly small to colour however.
If you are a comic book, superhero or Marvel fan, even if you never read the Young Marvel series, you will most likely enjoy this one! The artwork conjures images of all our favourites – the Avengers, SpiderMan, Wolverine and more – as young children with their superhero personalities. As well as this, the underlying humour on every page is great for bringing a smile to your face!
For those with concentration issues, there is a variety of intricate and simpler images, so you can adapt your colouring to your ability to focus depending on the day. The Deadpool image I coloured was done on a night when I could not focus and it was done in five minute sittings.
Line thickness and intricacy means that those with vision difficulties may struggle to decipher the images, but as always, please check the photos before deciding.
