Carousel Dreams is a unique book, and this starts with the cover. Unlike most extremes of colouring books – stark or bright – the soft matte card cover is a mix of soft pinks, purples and greys with a delicate carousel horse centred.
At 27.9cm x 21.6cm and 52 pages, this is not a huge book, and is a great size for taking to work, school or a commute.
The paper is the same as most independent colouring books available, bright white, lightly textured and of medium thickness.
Waterbased markers did not bleed unless I went over one area a number of times, and I was able to achieve a good amount of layers and blend with ease using coloured pencils. Wet media, including alcohol markers, will most likely bleed, so please ensure you have a few sheets of paper or card behind the image you are working on to prevent bleeding onto the next page!
Images are single sided, and do not enter the spine. The reverse of the images has a small amount of text, explaining the artists thoughts/inspiration for each image. This doesn’t interfere with the image at all.
There is a short, silent flip through at the end of this review.
YamPuffs style is a decidedly manga/anime style artwork, and this is reflected in this colouring book. 24 images are contained within this book, all reflecting the artists fondness for carousels and a fantasy theme intertwined.
The images range from single carousel horses, to full scenes, anime style women on unicorns – all in this artists line art style that combines manga with a more traditional fantasy style.
The linework is consistently moderate throughout, with some variation in line thickness that is very organic to the image. Intricacy varies a little, but there is mainly larger spaces to colour, giving you a lot of room to shade and blend, bringing these beautiful images to life.
If you enjoy fantasy, carousels, horses, or just fancy something different, this book will likely fit the bill! The tnsge of images and the nature of them makes this book and the artwork perfect for some escapism and distraction.
The intricacy is well suited to those with fluctuating concentration levels, as you can colour anything from a horses leg, to an entire image, depending on your ability to concentrate.
Line thickness and intricacy means that this book will most likely be suited to those who have vision or fine motor impairments, but as always, please do check the images before deciding.
