Book

With a subtle cream cover in a softe matte, Incredible Life Forms suits it’s theme from the get go. A coloured image from the interior of the book is centred on the cover.

The book measures 27.9cm x 21.6cm and has 112 pages, making it a standard size for most books, and a good size for home or away.

The spine is glue bound, and the book lays quite flat from first use, becoming more pliable with use. Most of the images do not enter the spine, with the few that do only losing a very small amount.

Images are contained to one side, with the facing page containing the scientific title for the image and some pages also containing a relevant famous quote in the upper left corner.

As images are single sided, you needn’t worry about bleeding through and having to choose which image to colour – simply remove the blotter page contained in the back and pop that behind the image to protect the next one.

Pencils lay down nicely on the bright white, medium weight,  textured paper, and water based markers only bleed slightly. Alcohol markers and other wet media will bleed, so be sure to pop a few sheets of paper behind the page you are working on to protect the next image.

There is a short, silent flipthrough at the end of this review.

Ernst Haeckel was a prominent biologist and artist in the mid-1800s who became very well known for both his scientific work and artworks. This book combines both, including his artistic renderings of various life forms in a scientific artwork style.

The images are very dark – this is the first thing I noticed. Greyscale artwork is very popular amongst colourists, and this is technically greyscale – however it may be difficult to achieve the vibrancy and finish that most colourists strive for.

Images are very varied, with a variety of life forms represented, included algae, jellyfish, starfish, coral and many other life forms.

Intricacy is quite mixed throughout, although there are open spaces in most of the images. Linework is hard to judge in a book of this style, but the lines throughout are quite thick, although in a very sketchy style.

Health

This book combines science and art in a beautiful way, but the images are not suited to everyone. The darkness of the images may make them difficult to colour and achieve the effect you desire, so I would not recommend this to those who prefer lineart, or even most greyscale.

For those with fluctuating concentration, if you do enjoy this style of imagery to colour, this book will be well suited as the images are not large and won’t require a large time investment.

Those with vision or fine motor skills impairments may struggle with the linework and intricacy of some images, so please do check the images and flipthrough before you decide.

Thankyou for reading and I hope you’ve enjoyed this review!

  1. I love the idea of this, but it would be great if someone took them and cleaned them and made them more suitable for colouring, then I would definitely buy it. As it is I don’t even like any greyscale, so I wouldn’t buy it. Thanks for the review, I was so intrigued by this but now I won’t waste my money.
